Letter from the Editor, March 2018
Hello readers, and welcome to the March 2018 issue of The Hurdle Magazine. In this month’s issue, we focus on the beginning of the outdoor season, and all the joys and sorrows that come with it.
Freelance writer Teige West is back, this time with the first of a series of articles on mindfulness and its practical application to one’s training. This article, entitled “Sports Psychology: Mindfulness,” focuses on sports psychology methods that can be used to improve performance and one’s quality of life as a whole.
My other ace-in-the-hole freelance writer, Melinda Burris Willms, has written another timely piece for this issue. In “Preventing Pollen Allergies from Sidelining your Performance,” she tackles the nasty problem that crops of this time of year to ruin workouts and derail training. This article provides some useful tips on how to keep the air passages clear as the flowers bloom.
In “Putting the Pieces Together,” I discuss the how the various aspects of hurdling technique function together to comprise one, unified motion. Often we teach hurdling in parts and hurdlers learn how to hurdle in parts, so this article emphasizes the need of always being able to see the big picture that all these parts comprise.
This month’s workout, “Sprint Starts Workout,” is designed to help the 100/110m hurdler to stay aggressive and maintain a sprinter’s mentality when clearing hurdles from a block start
“An Ocean You Never Will Cross” is a personal piece in which I discuss my journey in hurdling and my relationship to the event, focusing on my firm belief that we need to do all we can to ensure that the event continues to evolve.
Finally, “Into the Outdoor Season” serves as sort of an instructional guide on facilitating hurdlers’ transition from the indoor season to the outdoor season in regards to their training.
Thanks to Teige and Melinda for contributing outstanding articles to the magazine, and thanks to all of you readers for subscribing to the magazine. Good luck with the outdoor season!
