Letter from the Editor, June 2020
Hello Subscribers, and welcome to the June 2020 edition of The Hurdle Magazine. As we continue to navigate training through the coronavirus and all the restrictions it has caused, this issue, like the previous two, is centered around that theme.
Freelance writer Savannah Cress, in her article, “Will the 2021 Olympics Happen?”, takes an updated look at the possibilities of a restricted Games, and even a possible cancellation, based on the virus’ continued presence in many countries throughout the world.
Freelance writer Melinda Burris Willms gives us two excellent articles in this month’s issue. In “Vitamin D Deficiency & Supplementation Trend in Response to COVID-19,” Willms writes about the correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and contracting the coronavirus, and how to avoid knee-jerk reactions based on all the information and misinformation that is available regarding the topic. In her other article, “Tips for Heading Back to the Gym: How to Safely Resume Your Workout Now That COVID-19 Restrictions are Being Lifted,” Willms gives a list of do’s and don’t’s regarding the issue identified in the article’s title.
In my article, “We Cycle the Arms Like We Cycle the Legs,” I talk about the training sessions I’ve had with my athlete Brandon Johnson the past few weeks, in which I’ve been teaching him the cycle-arms style that I came up with a decade ago but have yet to implement in a race. Now, thanks largely in part to the coronavirus and the extra training time it has given us, ironically. it looks like Brandon will be the one to bring this style into competition.
My second article, “Is Renaldo Nehemiah the Greatest Hurdler Ever?”, is a continuation of my discussion of the biography I am writing on Nehemiah. In this article, I discuss his high school exploits, as well as his achievements in his first year of college at the University of Maryland.
This month’s workout, “Hurdle Drilling & Conditioning Workout,” is a workout that is designed for this in-between time that we’re in now — no races, butt not time for fall training yet.
Make time for the hurdles and make time for the people you love. Thanks to all of you for your continued support.
