Who:
Steve McGill. McGill has been coaching hurdlers since the mid-1990’s. His proteges include 2021 Olympic 100h silver medalist and former 100h world record holder Keni Harrison, 2010 400h NCAA champion Johnny Dutch, and 2013 110h NCAA champion Wayne Davis. McGill also served as hurdles specialist for 2022 U20 national champion Malik Mixon. In addition, McGill has coached numerous national and state champions over the years, either as their school coach, club coach, or private hurdles coach. McGill who began conducting Team Steve hurdle camps since 2017, is also author of the coaching manual, The Art of Hurdling (2021) and The Spiritual Dimension of Hurdling (2025). PROFESSIONAL HURDLER EVONNE BRITTON
Evonne Britton, the USA hurdler turned Ghana hurdler, was born in Capitol Heights Maryland July 28, 1991 as the 3rd child out of 5. Growing up in Texas, Evonne was involved in all types of sports, she played softball, basketball, volleyball, even danced but in track she naturally stood out in the hurdles. She started running the hurdles in middle school and from then on she loved track and thrived in the hurdles. As a freshman in high school she was the only Track and Field athlete from her school to Qualify to compete at the State Track meet in Austin Texas. In her senior year, she became the State Champion in the 100mh and medaled silver in the 300mh. Evonne’s high school performance gave her the opportunity to Earn a full athletic scholarship to run at The Pennsylvania State University.

COACH KEVIN HOWELL
Coach Kevin Howell, head coach at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC,  has been head coach there since 2022. Coach Howell and Coach McGill have known each other and worked together since 2011, when McGill coached Howell’s daughter Jackie in the hurdles. Coach Howell has partnered with Coach McGill at all but one of the Team Steve events dating back to 2017. Coach Howell is an expert when it comes to teaching block starts and sprint mechanics. Coach McGill’s and Coach Howell’s relationship is one of mutual appreciation, as each has grown tremendously by soaking up the knowledge of the other.

McGill and Howell’s coaching partnership kicked into full gear in 2012, when they both coached for the same youth club and Howell was sprints and hurdles coach at Cary High School in Cary, NC. Under Coach Howell’s tutelage, the Cary team went from 25th in the state to second before, and won two consecutive conference crowns.

Tentative Schedule:

8:00          arrival, introductions
8:30          dynamic warmup
9:00          sprint drill instruction (A marches, B marches, high knees)
9:30-10:00    Technique evaluations over one hurdle
10:00-11:00  Hurdle drills (marching popovers, trail leg fence drill)
11:00-11:45  Break for lunch, discussions
11:45-12:00  Dynamic warmup
12:00-12:30  Hurdle drills (quickstep drill)
12:30-1:00    Falling starts, 3-point starts with no hurdles
1:00-1:30      Block starts with no hurdles
1:30-2:15      Block starts over 1-3 hurdles
2:15-3:00      Competitive block starts over 1-3 hurdles (OR back to drilling for those who aren’t ready for competitive starts)
3:00-3:30      Wrap-up and good-byes

Updated Physical Exam:

  • Athletes must have an updated physical and must bring a copy of the physical to turn in at the beginning of camp. The copy can also be scanned and sent to Coach McGill at smcgillhh@aol.com.

What Athletes Will Do and Learn:

  • Athletes will be taught the downhill hurdling style, with an emphasis on the 1-2-3 action of the lead leg, trail leg, and lead arm.
  • Athletes will go through the progression of sprint drills and hurdle drills designed for beginners so that they understand the concepts and familiarize themselves with the vocabulary of downhill hurdling.
  • Athletes will go through the series of drills designed for advanced hurdlers so that they know how to continue to quicken their cadence to avoid plateauing.
  • Athletes will be instructed on the relationship between speed, rhythm, and technique.
  • Athletes will be guided in refining their block starts to the first hurdle.
  • Athletes will do competitive starts.
  • We may or may not have a long hurdle (200/300/400m) session, depending on demand.
